The Heidschnuckenweg is a long-distance hiking trail of 223 km that traverses the iconic landscapes of the Lüneburg Heath, in northern Germany. The route connects Hamburg to Celle, passing through vast expanses of heathland, pine forests, peaceful valleys and traditional villages. Famous for its purple blooms in late summer, it crosses one of the largest heathland areas in central Europe. The trek offers a unique immersion in a cultural landscape shaped for centuries by herds of Heidschnucke sheep.

How to get there

Public transport

Fully accessible

The Heidschnuckenweg is easily accessible thanks to the rail networks of Hamburg, Buchholz in der Nordheide, Handeloh, Soltau and Celle, all connected to the trail. The starting point is located near Hamburg-Neugraben station, accessible by S-Bahn from the centre of Hamburg. During the tourist season, the Heide-Shuttle, a free bus network serving more than 100 stops, allows you to reach many points along the route without a car. Several intermediate stations also make access and return journeys easy throughout the trek.
